Digital Industry Survey

In December 2010 New Zealand Trade and Enterprise contracted the Berman Group to conduct an in-depth study of companies active in the Waikato digital industry sector. Cheryl Reynolds of SODA and Steve Tritt of the regional office of NZTE have formed a team with Petr Adamek of the Berman Group to manage the study. The study aims to develop a better understanding of the breadth and scope of the region’s digital industry.

A total of 250 firms were evaluated prior to engagement, of which 110 were invited to participate in a short online survey and 30 were selected for face-to-face interviews. 41 firms participated in the study so far.

These firms:

  • employ over 1200 people in the Waiakto region,
  • have aggregate annual sales revenues of nearly NZ$ 250 million,
  • expect to grow sales by another NZ$ 36 million within one year, and
  • create 100 new jobs in the regional ICT sector during 2011.

The analysis attempts to characterize the aggregate value proposition of the sample and develop a regionally specific typology of firms in the sector by scope and size (level of contribution to regional economy in terms of employment, revenues, value added and exports), intensity of interactions with other firms and interactions with knowledge producers that support collaborative competitiveness.

Presentation and discussion of the findings with the participating firms and with the Digital Industry Leadership Group was held on March 30, 2011 in WINTEC.
